I gave it another good try but with the addition of the new genius female character (*cough* Mary Sue *cough*) I just couldn't. So many people love this book, but it's not for me.

So far the main character, Horza, has been in three life threatening situations and I've not cared. I don't need to be blown away, but I'd like to feel at least a little emotionally invested in him. The many long boring descriptions of his numerous crew mates and hamfisted communist utopian bad guys haven't helped. I'm going to keep reading for a bit but with much less enthusiasm than I started the book with.

A little bit of a slow start, but I was expecting that. Finally done with the introductions and coming back around to a character again! Yay! Pretty amazing world building so far, which is definitely par for the course with Hamilton.

*Now* she realizes she was wrong?! This series is amazing and it's a minor quibble, but I would have liked to see more of a transition from deluded sociopath to, aww shucks I'm sorry guys, my bad!

So far so good. Loving the writing and language usage, especially after a few of the duds I've experienced so far this year!

Page 61-220. Longest. chapter. ever (and it was a flashback to boot!). An hour in I realized my Kindle hadn't malfunctioned, this chapter actually was going to take over 2 hours and again, was just backstory. I surprisingly really enjoyed it, but it could've easily been a separate novella, or divided into more chapters spread throughout the book. Ah well. Soldiering on.

Punching someone in the back of the head when they're kissing you doesn't seem like it would be at all effective. Why not go for the good ole knee to the groin?

The main character seems to give "people" the benefit of the doubt rather arbitrarily. Or maybe she's just a bit xenophobic. Possible extenuating circumstances, but I did do an involuntary eye roll.

Once the real action started the characters had less time to be morons so my enjoyment rose substantially. I continue to enjoy the setting, and there was a nice little plot twist.

<spoiler>Main character when faced with something that could wipe out all human life in the universe: Eh. we're pretty good at surviving. Rescuing 5 people is totally worth potential species extermination! Smh >_< </spoiler>

Holy assumptions Batman! Really don't like it when characters make loads of baseless assumptions. And isn't it a life threatening situation rule that you don't even talk about dying until you've exhausted all other options? Not, "Oh shit! Something unforseen just happened! Two months until we die!"

Liking it so far, but wishing it was less fluffy. No one except the Liars seems afraid or at least trepidatious that there are other aliens out there. Little too much tell instead of show too, for my tastes.

Really liking most of the book except the relationship between Dakota and Corso. Their chemistry and dialog both feel super awkward. Like dude, you're hiding from people intent on killing you and Dakota almost died, but you're checking out her "apple sized breasts" and remembering having sex with her. Really?!

A new year and a new reading challenge has begun! I was so close to completing my last years', but in the eleventh hour Pokemon Sword/Shield were released. I was voluntarily held captive by Nintendo for the rest of the year. Shhhh, don't tell anyone! *sheepish* I've now healed from eye surgery and watched the new Witcher Netflix series, so I'm diving back into another magical world of words and imagination.

I'm loving this book and the format alternating between the Ark ship and the evolution of the planet's inhabitants, but I want the story lines to converge already lol! Really well written and entertaining so far though!

Finally some action to go with the long drawn out explanations of ship design, military procedures, and contemplative nose rubbing. I did absolutely LOVE that Nimitz had his own little treekitty survival pod though lol. Data really should have had one for Spot in Star Trek TNG haha!

If I took a shot every time Honor rubbed the tip of her nose I'd have spent the whole book drunk.

Reynolds just had a main character get infornation that all of a sudden made everything clear to her, but the reader wasn't told what that was :( Ugh!

Reynolds seems to little light on the world building to me, letting the reader do most of the work. I feel like I've had to pay closer attention than I'm used to, and am still left feeling pretty confused at times. Maybe the amount of different character perspectives and dates is contributing too that. I feel like things are just starting to click together plot wise hopefully.

Carol. is right, no world building so a little confusing to start with. I'm really considering switching to Revelation Space (from the main series) and picking this up again later when I know more about the world.

That moment when you just know you've found an exceptional author! I've only finished the prologue and I think I might be in love with John Sclazi's voice and humor! What a way to start a book! Crossing my fingers that the rest of the book is as enjoyable!

Good so far. The main character transitioned rather quickly from nameless guard to high society intrigue, but not unbelievably so.

Oh good lord! I heard this book could've used some editing concerning length and I agree wholeheartedly. I get wanting to provide backstory, but I feel like each foray into the past approaches a novella in length. What does this have to do with the actual plot?! It's interesting, but greatly detracts from the flow.
