There’s a man with advanced dementia who’s routinely allowed to sit outside. Alone. By a pond.

On one hand, I’m kind of impressed this book has been so well reviewed and received when research into the setting is severely lacking. Honestly, the story itself and the writing are enjoyable. But to use the word “orderly” when describing an STNA in 2025? Is Nurse Ratched going to show up in her little nurse hat next?

1. A retirement home in upstate NY where octogenarians have to walk outside to get from one building to another? Absolutely not.
2. Ratio of male to female residents should be like 1:10. Way too many men so far.
3. A place like this would have emergency pull cords in the rooms.
Good so far, perhaps I just know too much.

21st century Victorian Gothic is my love language.

I’m confused, but so are the characters, so it feels like we’re all in this together.

The turning point is Anne Rice goes to Bridgerton.

I am curious if the halfway point will a feature a big reveal, or a turning point in the narrative.

I was down with classic vampires tearing through 16th century Spain. But standing at the brink of block paragraphs of Alice and her sister and their angst has me questioning my choices.

I read a review that said “Big on vibes, slim on plot” and starting with that in mind is critical.

-The British lost the American Revolution because they were more focused on keeping the Caribbean. Cornwallis surrendered one day before reinforcements arrived. The British offered freedom to slaves who fought for/ loyal to Britain, which lead to an exodus of former slaves to Europe. Meanwhile, the British held the Caribbean, which was still wholly dependent on slavery.

I am in over my head, but I will not give up.
European colonizers twisted themselves into absolute knots to justify slavery, but obviously came up short.
The Salem Witch Trials were the result of PTSD over violence between whites and Indians.
The frequency of slave rebellions in the mid 18th century.

DNF. Detached, isolated SAHM who acknowledges her extreme privilege but acts like she’s never heard of therapy, medication, communicating with her partner, or any number of things that could mitigate her situation. That trope is tired, and the “turning into a dog” storyline was not weird enough to rescue it.
