Mixed bag to here: some chapters are first-rate, others so-so. My library copy is overdue, so I'll have to resume this at some future date.

Morphs into murder mystery as the deadline to renew the Wheel approaches. And it's hard to keep track of all these made-up names! I can't even recall the name of the MC. Who is one kick-ass lady!

This one is intensely political, to the point of being annoying to a 2021 American. Besides the Trotskyist/Fourth International -- I mean, I get it that WW1 was the Great Tragedy for Europe. But not for the US, OK? And his casual denigration of Middle America is seriously annoying, to one who grew up there. OK, this is from a character, but still. Grump, grump.

A perfect illo of "don't judge a book by its cover"! The library copy in front of me, the HMH 2015 reprint, has AMAZINGLY sappy cover art: a big-headed, busty princess and a sappy-looking dragon with long eyelashes! Plus, the library classes it as a "juvenile"!

I'm struggling to finish this one, and don't know that I will. Unlike with the sequel, which is first rate.

@ 25/186, hrm. Time to look at some of the less-favorable reviews. With humor, you never know.

Not quite what I was hoping for Back to "HMS Surprise", which is. A&M #3, ~40% in and moving swimmingly.

Stalled at not quite halfway in.
Start of the novella is her 1996 novella "The Cost to Be Wise," available at https://smallbeerpress.com/wp-content... This is a fallen-colony story (as is the novel), and it's grim. I skipped over that. The novel itself is less grim, but hardly cheerful. And the MC is not a take-charge sort of protagonist. So I'm putting it on hiatus for now
