The characters in this book are the most original I have ever read. Like, I feel like these must be based on real people because how can each one be so unique? I just love this book

Well, I definitely won’t finish this before the school year starts but I have to say I’m enjoying every bit of it anyway

I cannot believe how engrossed I am in this story. I usually have a hard time with Mr. Dickens but I’m in love with this character.

Milton has drawn many comparison between Nazism and McCarthyism. The parallels between McCarthy and the current administration in the US are stark as well.

“…’Outside, in the streets, in the general community, “everyone” is happy….And you are an alarmist. You are saying that this must lead to this, and you can’t prove it….your colleagues pooh-pooh you as a pessimist or even neurotic. You are left with your close friends, who are, naturally, people who have always thought as you have.’”

A few key takeaways, so far:
-The average German viewed Nazism as a positive because they noted they had more jobs and a better economy when Hitler was in power.
-Of the 10 men studied for this book, all of them say Hitler wasn’t the problem or probably didn’t know about some of the terrible things the Nazis were doing.
-Even the 1 man who now opposes Naziism admits that he was always relieved not to be a target.

Started over from the beginning. I remember reading this years ago and it felt hard to understand. Now it’s so easy. It’s like reading English. It just shows if you keep practicing how much you can improve your comprehension of a new language.

More reading for grad school but honestly, I am really enjoying this. I have been wanting to improve my listening skills and this book has great advice. I am a chronic over-talker and interrupter so this is helpful for me.

Philip is an idiot. But that’s kind of the point.

“It seemed to Philip, brooding over these matters, that in the true painters, writers, musicians there was a power which drove them to such complete absorption in their work as to make it inevitable for them to subordinate life to art….and life slipped through their fingers unlived.” Makes me think of my dad sadly

I wasn’t in the mood for Bildungsroman but here we are! So far it feels very modern. Philip’s experience in life feels like something you yourself could have experienced in your 20’s.
