I was really into this book when I first started it, but I feel the author is over-exhausting her point. I don’t really think this is her fault, just the nature of material. The general theme is that some women were pseudo-empowered by vehemently misogynistic institutions, yet subsequently became victims of those institutions. Does it make a difference if they’re Protestant or Catholic Nazis? Probably?

Reading this is bringing back so many memories and emotions from reading Huckleberry Finn for the first time in high school. I usually dislike reinterpretations of “classics,” but I genuinely think this book could become a classic in itself.

I really wish I was reading this book with the guidance of a teacher; I also really wish I had a physical copy so I could make annotations. But I’m absolutely blown away by this translation, and for the first time I wish I spoke Portuguese and could appreciate this work in its original form.
