Curious, has anyone with no mind's eye imagery read this book successfully? I'm not finding it manageable to follow as it seems very visuals-dependent...

The magic and wonder are palpable, with poverty and hardships right beside I am feeling very much like I am in for quite a ride.

I am already hugely endeared to (and have respect for) Billy and am looking forward to the journey that lies ahead.

The writing is exquisite.

The magic system. Oh. My. Goodness.

This *book*.

Immediately drawn in to the story by the MC and her experiences.
Introduced to what I guess is the main antagonist, and found him to be a bit caricature-esque.
So early in the stakes already have my heart and soul wringing nervous hands, and I am certain I'm going to adore this story.
Grief is palpable.

Am reading an ebook copy so page numbers are out.

I just got chapter 20.

Chapter 19 was an absolute delight. While I wasn't invested in the action scenes, the quieter, interpersonal scenes are excellent.

Feel as though the prologue and Dylan POV chapter have spoiled the delight of slow discovery, and that there was enough information in other chapters that a slow reveal was possible.

Finding the globe to globe adventure a bit tedious, unfortunately. Missing a distinct internal conflict arc.

Enjoying the action driven by MC, and am curious about and engaged with the mum mystery.

So far the drip feed of information about magic/mum/magical sisters has been good-raising more questions than answering and keeping my interest.

Main character is sweet. I like her quiet nature, and while she's quite internal and maybe passive in areas, she drives action.

Father-daughter dynamic makes my heart ache.

Descriptions are gorgeously written.

Having trouble getting into it so am putting it aside for now and will try again in a little while.

Ooooooof.

This is a painful read. A brutal, very real world. I had to pause for a breather after Zélie's last words of the chapter.

Pausing for a while.

Gahh. This is a great story. Celine Kiernan has done it again!
