Man, what a difference from Esselmont. Dickinson grabs your attention from the first page and doesn’t let go.

Abandoning this about 15% through. I’d looked forward to this after the previous book in the series, but Sanderson’s anachronistic and clichéd writing just rubs me the wrong way; to the point that I feel active distaste for picking up this book. Hopefully I’ll eventually develop sufficient patience to give it another go, but I’m not giving odds on that happening any time soon.

«Just a sec. This dress is being a pain.» Perhaps this high fantasy world is supposed to be far-future sci fi, the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the gated community where Aaron Sorkin alums go to retire. Really hard to maintain suspension of disbelief when people wearing mediæval armor and swords speak like millennial hipsters. Is Adolin visiting Shallan, his bethrothed, in her chambers to… Netflix and chill?

Nope. le Carré may be a magnificent author, but life's too short to suffer through his non-spy novels.

Reynolds is infuriating to read. Chock full of great sfnal stuff, but he jerks his characters along to serve the plot in a way that makes even his weak characterization feel like they're just cardboard cutouts dancing on the author's strings. I'm actually having to take stupid-breaks every so often when the burning sensation gets to be too much to bear.

So an automated cargo loader not only reacts to the pressure a human arm can exert (which in itself is ridiculous given the masses and tolerances involved), but even does so in such a way that its cargo shifts and tumbles both cargo and loader? This does not bode well for my continuing suspension of disbelief...
