Slow going. I almost gave up at the two chapters spent describing the types and colours of whales. However, now that the boats are being lowered and whales sighted it's getting more interesting again.

Temporarily abandoned, the intrigue and betrayal were getting quite stressful

I feel like a lot of interesting things were set up in the first half of the book, and just dropped for the rest of it. Combined with my lacking background knowledge on the Vietnam War, finishing this was a chore with no payoff. Ah well.

These final chapters are really enjoyable, and actually move and surprise me. The atmosphere definitely peaks here, as Emily looks back on her adventures and is truly forlorn

Parts of Emily's stay at Udolpho were pretty dull, and I couldn't even really say what she was doing day to day, but at least there were fewer poems. Volume 4 is getting really interesting now, as we're teased with the loose ends of the three key mysteries she's encountered. Valancourt is a whiny, weakly motivated 'nice' guy. The atmosphere of the north wing is genuinely spooky! Best part!
