On a typical day, it is easy to glance at strangers and forget the most fundamental things about them. That they are just as real as you are. That they have triumphed and suffered and like you they are engaged in something - living - that is hard and rich and brief.

What are you willing to give up to alleviate someone else’s suffering?

This is the world we’ve created. A world in which one privileged sliver consumes insatiable and the best everyone hopes for is to not be consumed. It is not without reason that the most powerful nations on earth won’t intervene to stop a genocide but will happily bomb one of the poorest countries to keep a shipping lane open.

We all have our path and the best thing women can do in clear the way for another in whatever way we can.

Every single empire in its official discourse has said that it is not like all the others. That its circumstances are special … and that it uses force only as a last resort. And, sadder still, there always is a chorus of willing intellectuals to say calming words about benign or altruistic empires, as if one shouldn’t trust the evidence of one’s eyes watching the destruction
