A raw, unfiltered examination of an incredible past. Focusing more on Andrew’s journey as a person than stories about the band, this is a heart-wrenchingly honest memoir. It makes me love the music even more knowing the journey behind it.

This series is the perfect argument against completionist "start from volume 1" thinking. And yet still, I power through. Lemire's run starts in the next volume, right? Right?

It’s OK so far. The main problem that I’m having with the book is that London seems incredibly obsessed with explaining every detail of the rules of this fantasy world immediately. It’s definitely bogging down the narrative. It’s the kind of thing that may have benefited from an editor jumping up and down screaming, “Show, don’t tell!“

One more section! This has been a long, long buddy read.

Please tell me your next book is in this universe, Mr. O'Malley. I'm making such slow progress on this one because I have no idea how long the wait for another one (if there's another one) will be and don't want it to end.

"Is it better to speak or to die?" Okay. That one hit me.

I love Dave's take on what it takes to be a good teacher, even if I doubt my ability to "bring it" every second of every day the way he does. It is definitely giving me a lot to think about.

Three hours in, and man, Jonathan's friends seem weirdly hip to the idea of something otherworldly being "meant to be," etc. Interested to see where this goes, but their gung-ho nature about these new developments was really bizarre.

Finished in time for the Next Gen Cadre "book club" meeting on this. Just got past the part where he says this is very hard to implement in math classrooms. Welp, there goes that?

It's a more interesting mystery than the previous two books, but I'm not a fan of the personal developments with Robin and Cormoran necessarily. We'll see how J.K. handles it in the second half!

So far so good. Joe Hill is one of the few prose authors that really, truly can make me feel scared.

The prose is not strong in this debut novel so far. We're looking at some major mistakes an editor should have fixed. So far, there have been at least three semicolons and all of them have been unnecessary. I know, it sounds small, but it's killing my internal copy editor.
