Don't think that I am going to meet my goal this year.

Next chapter is "The Rise of Mohammedanism". This is a fairly old history book, copyright 1917, and I am very interested in the historians take on the religion. It's a fairly substantial chapter, as was the previous chapter on Pope Gregory titled "Gregory the Great."

This is one of the books from my Dad's collection, Copyright 1917. In the opening chapter Thorndike advocates using original sources as references (pg. 7) his reasoning being "One must be careful, then, where one gets ones historical information and especially any sweeping generalizations." (pg. 8) These days there aren't as many historians who follow that scholarly precept.

So far, pretty interesting. Hall, the writer has made reference to several books that are on my to-read or currently reading lists. He is also the founder of the Philosophical Research Society, www.prs.org ,were I may find additional reading.

From pg. 80 "There is another garment without a seam which we are told was often worn by the ancient brethren in the days of the Essenes, when the monastery of the lowly Nazarenes rose in silent grandeur from the steep sides of Mt. Tabor, to be reflected in the inscrutable waters of the Dead Sea." I'm also currently reading The Dead Sea Scrolls in English and was not expecting any connection between the two.

I am going to try and knock a few chapters out of this book. It is a pretty dry read, similar to the book I read about Stonehenge. If one is into digging up bones, I'm sure it would be a breeze. I do find archeological findings interesting, I just don't have the patience to be the one doing it
