I can feel people hating on this because of its structure but I love nothing more than really fun takes on novel structure so I’m having a great time

I read this once as a kid but I don’t think I processed any of it? The first like, 5 percent was really shockingly lurid (as people say) and the plot isn’t so much a plot as a series of events but somehow at 30 percent I’m honestly starting to vibe with it anyway. Weirdest thing

So I really did not read what this was about beforehand and yeah the name is accurate I keep trying not to cry while listening

I get all the reviews that are like “this is what every other edgy YA school based novel wishes it was” now

I’ve been reading like back to back novels written by queer people of color that feature effortlessly queer and POC run spaces so reading this is like being SHOCKED back into white man author hours KAJDKSJD I like it so far despite that it’s just that the Roman Empire jokes are writing themselves in my mind every chapter

This started a little all over for me but this world is genuinely so interesting. It’s so nice to be out of the realm of western fantasy for once

Did the author seriously just do what I think she did. I’m fighting not to dnf in utter disbelief

You know it occurs to me that this very much isn’t a fantasy, high or otherwise, it’s at best historical fiction with a magical realism bend but def not fantasy

No for real why didn’t her editor go hey man…I don’t know if the readers really HAVE to have their head beaten in with footnotes every 500 words just because you forgot to mention some pivotal plot info and/or had to flex your degree again…

Bruh these footnotes are doing too much

What is it with books I’m reading recently where an author is telling me repeatedly that these characters are Very Close Friends while having no textual basis for it. Like clearly it’s not the point of this novel it’s just a pattern I’ve noticed bc I’m love fictional friendships lol
