NOT happy that I can't add the right edition of this book rather than a digital reprint but it reflects how Marmion seems to have fallen off the radar for modern readers (I couldn't even find a Penguin Classics version). This book was HUGE in its day and for at least a century afterwards (Bertie Wooster is not a well-read character but he knows Young Lochinvar and Jane Eyre reads it too). A tangled web indeed.

There are some fascinating aspects to this book but of the whole series it's probably the one that leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. However it felt wrong to skip straight from to the Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club when rereading. And at least I'd rather be critically analysing Sayers than slogging through the tartan noir tomes that seem to be the mainstay of my local library.
