Really digging the feminist empowerment subtle messaging of Ch. 4....Venus Flytrap, Tarantulas, Diana, Aphrodite. Women rule the roost! Lots of house/sheltering references as well.

Introduced to the poetry and music of Cat Stephens and it's references to houses as well. "I built my house from barley rice..."

Also, Willa asks, "What if Iano's joy was the tentpole of her sanity?" Another reference to shelter.

ok, ok, I'm still reading and it's gotten better, things are finally starting to move on. I think maybe Tsukiyama wanted to establish what was good about the characters' lives before it started getting bad, but it was just too much, too icky, I don't know how else to describe it.

I feel like I should be saying this book is AMAZING, but I just...can't. I'm sorry, I am bored! I can't describe quite how I'm feeling as I read, almost as though the author wants it to sound good and fascinating and poetical, but I just don't feel it. It hasn't earned it yet.

I find myself constantly editing sentences. I don;t know if he purposefully did it that way to appeal to the masses, or if he really is just a terrible writer. Takes a long time to get to a point and kind of stumbles all over the place. Book could be a lot more concise! I keep getting lost in the details. But I keep chugging along! I hope there is something useful for me in here. Looking forward to the exercises.

Haven't gotten very far in this book, but the general gist right now is that parents hate being parents. Hmmmm.

Really, really enjoying this book. Steinbeck is a master wordsmith and philosopher of human behavior.

I thought I'd read this before, but I have no memory of the story. Is it possible to completely forget a book you read?

Kay is reading A Passage to India
The book has picked up the pace and I am past the climax. I no longer have to look up 2 or 3 words a page. It really demonstrates the complete disdain "conquerers" have over the natives of any country. The English people think of Indians as second rate citizens, completely underneath them, dirty, automatically guilty of any suspected infraction, unworthy of mercy or consideration, etc. Completely exasperating!

I picked up this book wanting a quick read. After reading/skimming about 7 chapters, I felt like I was missing out on a lot. So started over, taking notes. I looked up every unfamiliar word. By chapter 5 I had 4 notebook pages, front and back. General vocabulary words, notes on colonial India - the terminology, the culture, as well as names and titles. So much to keep track of. Definitely not a quick read.

Kay is reading How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk
This is kind of a re-reader for me. I've read bits and pieces of it in the past few years. But now picked it up again to remind myself of its principles, and finding them even more useful now that my daughter is 8. Especially the part about listening when your kids talk. Instead of trying to give advice, just be sympathetic by echoing their feelings.

Kay is on page 241 of 464 of Moral Ground: Ethical Action for a Planet in Peril
I'm not going to finish this one. It is SO long. It needed to be maybe half that long. Plus, I don't think the question should be "Do we have a moral obligation to take action to protect the future of a planet in peril?" as is so often repeated in this book. The question should be: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

With all the news about environmental problems and cruelty to animals in the news today, I hoping this book will provide me with some hope, or at least something to do. I feel my life is at a crossroads now - that my current job is not fulfilling my purpose in life (okay, I KNOW it is not). I'm trying to figure out what I can do about it, and am hoping this book can give me some ideas and insights.
