Seriously though, I’ve always loved and agreed with the Bard’s ideals of the balance, and there being light and dark in everyone, but this book is next level ideology that I for one am ready to follow.

I love Alison and her writing style but it‘s hard when your favorite author is /so obviously/ smarter than you and uses so many words that you don’t know 😭😭😭 like it’s great because I get to learn new vocabulary! But I feel dumb 😭😅

I know it’s probably not the purpose of these parts, but Hem freaking out over and over about how /pretty/ and /handsome/ everyone around him is is hilarious 😂 like he’s in the middle of a huge despairing war and he’s sitting there thinking ‘oh shit, am I bi???’

It pleases me to no end to know that the Elidhu have cat-like eyes, i.e. slit pupils. Cause you know what that means. The moment their pupils stop looking so cool and fresh and narrow, they turn into big round sillypools.

So honestly, though the last few pages and Maerad’s mental and emotional state is both well-written and so a joy to read and absolutely terrible because I love her so much, all she needs to do is have a good scream and cry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sometimes you just gotta scream about it and you’ll feel better. Otherwise your throat chakra calcifies.

Literally the best scene in any book ever. I reread this scene at least 3-4 times every time I read this book, because it’s so gorgeous and exhibits Maerad’s ~otherness~ that sets her apart from traditional bards so clearly. It’s a beautiful defining point in her story and a showcase of the easiest way she interacts with her powers, through instinct.

This scene right here, this fucking bunny hull scene, this is why the riddle is my favorite book in the series. /Nothing/ beats angry mangy hull still trying to fight. Alison’s mind, like 🤯😍🤯

It’s so satisfying to reread a well loved book and see things underlined and noted in the margines. It’s like looking in a mirror and seeing some things have changed, but at your core, the same things you loved then still catch on your soul in the same way.

The descriptions of depression and how people came to understand it with help from nature is deeply touching. It resonated immediately and powerfully, even making me tear up unexpectedly. It can get a little cheesy at parts, but the message of the book is sound.

I love this little brujita, she’s got such a big spirit. She’s afraid but doesn’t let it stop her from defying the things other people’s fears have kept in place for generations 💜 even with this distracting (but not even that bad!) hettie romance plot line (there have been worse!) this remains such a powerful and fun book for me 💪🏽

Oh baby 😍😍😍 my heart just! Sang! When she’s telling off her aunt! And trying to be upfront with her mom! The self confidence leapt out!

I always forget how real this book gets about her insecurity brought on by her skin color and how people react to it. Some bigoted shit she has to deal with throughout the whole book.

Haven’t been able to put this down! Love this young, diverse, and absolutely cherished female cast!

Calcifer and Howl were really made for each other though, both lazy, cowardly, absolute shits to be around with for the most part, both have too much charm and talent then they know what to do with 🙄 they’re lucky they survived long enough for Sophie to get there

Quite a turn in a very small amount of pages! It’s the mystery I expected with new components!

I can’t help but wonder if I would be missing the clues the same way Sophie is if I hadn’t seen the movie? I don’t regret it though, I adore this book and it’s movie and everything about both 💜 what a treasure
