It’s giving “the world is against me and cruel for refusing to help me but also anytime anyone tries to help me I cross them and literally tell them to go fuck themselves”

No sympathy at all.

I guess they could have done some commentary on social strife and classism and how those who are disabled and former criminals are treated but realistically Sammy’s too awful for me to care. He treats everyone awful and doesn’t care about anyone but himself his alcohol and his tobacco so why should I care if he gets treated like trash? He is

Reading this after my phone and computer both died and I split my head open and blood was streaming down my face in the ER for 10 hours seemed fitting

The amount of times I almost fell asleep reading this…. It feels like he made him blind just bc he didn’t know what to talk about so he was like let me describe the feeling of his feet on the ground bc that’s all there is. Also the jumping back and forth of using I and he for Sammy and using I for some mystery narrator also is VERY jarring

I keep finding new favorite quotes in this book because of how absurd they are. Current is “Fucking quack ya cunt, fucking Donald Duck, it’s a hospital you’ll be needing.”

“It was a sort of love few other people could understand. It was total and it was overwhelming and it could be cruel.”

“When you were twelve years old and you were all that stood between your family and annihilation, you didn’t learn moderation.”

I’m obsessed with how she writes these relationships and how tightly they cling to each other to the point where it isn’t healthy out of pure fear

“You can’t pay for tragedy with more tragedy or draw life from death.”

This book is the best I have yet to read of Clare’s. The way the trauma of the war, the resulting racism and discrimination, the way each character has been forced to grow up too quickly, the way each character has been impacted so deeply by the prior events, it is all magnificently done. I do truly regret not finishing it sooner
