I discovered that Hammet wrote The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man amongst other books. So I was pretty excited about it. The writing was archaic and I heard my head voice as an old b/w movie. I got halfway through it and found it's plot to be too contrived and obvious for me.
123 pages and I quit.

After 514 pages of day by day tedium interrupted by five scenes of murder/attempted murder, I've given up.
It's a book about politics. Not really political intrigue.

This book should be listed as Young Adult fiction.
The narrator and protagonist, Oliver Quartermaine, is sixteen years old.

I was hoping that the slow, deliberate and excessively verbose style of the first book, Annihilation, was due to the narration of Biologist, but this book continues along the same lines.
Like reading through mud.
193 pages in and I just couldn't finish it.
