Giving up for now--overdue at the library, and I kept getting lost. I'll try again some other time.

This is very beautiful, in a plainspoken way, but it's bleak as all fuck, and I can only bear it in short spurts. But wow, some of the sentences are perfect in the way I most envy because that style--hard and honest and simple as a slap--is not one I have ever been able to master.

I have probably read every page of this, but I've been skipping around in the midst of all my Brahms research, and now I barely even remember where I am. But this is a book to savor, and I'm glad I own it, because it has been absolutely invaluable for my program notes. I just ordered Swafford's equally monumental Beethoven bio, and if it's even a fraction as useful to me, it will be money well spent!

I had to bail on this book, sadly. Although the subject interests me greatly, her writing was simply too annoying to endure.
