Back in it again, the plot seems increasingly promising. Curious what comes next.

this part really annoys me. The extent to which all the people know each other despite being from very different social circles seems very implausible. Like the oligarchs are connected with the working class people almost directly and then also there are three(!) different ways the main character is connected to them. Plus the politicians and the conservatives increasingly seem like simplistic caricatures. Meh.

It’s slowly drawing me in. I like the pace. Chapters with different perspectives. There’s trouble ahead. Nothing outrageous or intense. But the characters become more palpable. Lots of dialogue. It’s an audiobook and the narrator is doing a good job switching between cockney, Scottish, RP with appropriate emotions. Feels very real. Curios where this is heading! Interesting plot line with a troubling tenant.

“Liberals are always interested in money, they care about it, and they care about what it brings, but they reserve the right to disdain that impulse in other people.” Curious where this is heading politically, some things seemed iffy but setting is lively- dirty money, journalists, messy family relationships, working class, subculture, London. Vivid characters. Didn’t get the protagonist yet. Very contemporary.

Listening to the audiobook. I’m enjoying it a lot. It took me a while to get into it but some passages are written beautifully. It’s also sad. I like the writing, some passages are clear and simple narrations that seem focused and meaningful. There were also parts that I couldn’t leave and was eager to know what happens next. There’s intelligence too and a perceptiveness for personalities. Looking forward!

Wow! I’m really excited about this. There’s so much I like about this. So few pages and so much has happened already. The language is poignant, graphic, evocative. What appears is the image of a deeply troubled man. It was really heartbreaking to read about the self-denial. So beautiful beautiful but also cruel - the depth and substance of this surpasses a heap of other books I’ve read. I’m in awe.
