A kinda female Tom Sawyer. There are actually ~3 main characters: Mick (the female Tom Sawyer), Singer (an ironically-named deaf-mute), and then a tie between the cafe owner Biff, the labor agitator Blount, and the Negro doctor Copeland. Unsparing is how I would describe the prose - and remarkably lucid and astounding to have come from a writer in her twenties. And, well, sad.
