Kerrfunk is on page 141 of 240 of The Pursuing God: A Reckless, Irrational, Obsessed Love That's Dying to Bring Us Home
I generally like Butler's perspective on creation, incarnation, and salvation.

Kerrfunk is on page 53 of 128 of Mudhouse Sabbath
So far I very much liked Winner's examination of Sabbath and of mourning.

Kerrfunk is on page 115 of 395 of Prelude to Civil War: The Nullification Controversy in South Carolina 1816-1836
I wanted to look a bit more into the years leading up to the Civil War, and this book delivers, though its focus so far is pretty much South Carolina alone.

Kerrfunk is on page 158 of 288 of John Barleycorn: Alcoholic Memoirs
This kind of leaves me speechless. Autobiographical narration of Jack London's descent into the world of "John Barleycorn," his anthropomorphism of alcohol.

Kerrfunk is on page 88 of 208 of The Heart of Henri Nouwen: His Words of Blessing
"Are not right beliefs/worship (orthodoxy), right affections (orthopathos), and right actions (orthopraxis) just as important as a right heart (orthocardia)? It was Henri's deep conviction that every human being is 'born in intimate communion with the God who created us in love...' Before there is original sin there is original blessing..." (p. 18-19)

Kerrfunk is on page 55 of 200 of Reviving Old Scratch: Demons and the Devil for Doubters and the Disenchanted
"Does the Devil exist? As in literally? I don't know. Maybe. I wouldn't rule it out. But I do know this: Something killed Jesus. Something real. And the Bible named it: Satan." (p.11)

Kerrfunk is on page 255 of 336 of Just Mercy
The author details the progress of one specific wrongful imprisonment case, "highlighted" by other example after example and backed up by a host of sobering statistics about the abuses and injustices that continue to permeate the systemic racism within the penal system of the United States.

I am only vaguely familiar with the TV show about Making a Murderer, but it seems this is real similar in the horrible injustice it describes. Oof.

Kerrfunk is on page 177 of 304 of What's So Amazing About Grace?
I am very engaged by this book, though occasionally frustrated by its datedness (1997. Not the author's fault!)

Kerrfunk is on page 490 of 976 of The Pillars of the Earth (Kingsbridge, #1)
It came highly recommended, and it's good. Every now and then, though, I feel I'm reading Follett's commentary about religion, and not a story.

Kerrfunk is on page 161 of 384 of Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic
(mostly) well-written documentary on the rise of black-tar heroin in North America.

Quinones covers a lot of history and a lot of ground, literally. It's a fascinating read, interrupted by me chasing various rabbits online. Quinones does repeat a lot (he has to) and I wish there were some pictures.

Fascinating.

This book is lovely. The first chapter is like runner porn. Second chapter starts with the famous stanza of Frost's "Two Tramps in Mud Time." Can't go wrong there.
