The least realistic thing about the novel so far? Getting an ongoing psych appointment through UNC student health services in less than a day.

Continuing on my jag of unlikable protagonists in literary fiction. The difference is that I think Baldwin knows how terrible his protagonist is, but Plath does not. I think that if this was a long novel, I'd probably DNF.

Also we are a third of the book and the author has neither gotten laid nor has she really seemed to be enjoying Paris.

Y'know, reading about the literal riots and mob action of NYC Patriots against people who wrote anything remotely negative during the American Revolution definitely puts the moral panic about "cancel culture" in perspective.

While there are things to be recommended about authors reading their own books, Donna Tartt's very distinctive Southern accent doesn't really jive with her California dude protagonist. It's taking me out of the narrative somewhat.

Dnf at 50%. Her villain seems to be men, but that's a very wide brush and excludes how men of color and queer, trans, and disabled men experience the world. She means the patriarchy, of course, but I think lacks the understanding of feminist thought to get there. The monsters thing is a conceit at most and a thin cover for a memoir/rant. Too tiresome to finish.
