Jonathan Freedland has done an outstanding job with The Escape Artist, telling the story of Rudi Vrba, who—together with Fred Wetzler—were the first Jews to escape Auschwitz. The book answered questions I long had about why so many did not rebel, explaining the painful reality that “human beings find it almost impossible to conceive of their own death” (p. 308). An eye-opening and sobering read.
