في كل عصر، يعرب البشر عن آراء ويتبنون مواقف يظنون أنها نابعة من تفكيرهم الخاص، فيما هي تأتيهم في الواقع من "ذهنية العصر" تلك. وليس ذلك بمثابة القدر المحتوم، بل لنقل إنها ريح شيدية القوة يصعب مقاومتها.

قرأت أخيراً هذه الشهادة لسفير اسرائيلي عن حياته المهنية في خمسينيات وستينيات القرن العشرين: «كانت مهمتنا حساسة، لأنه توجب علينا على السواء أن نقنع العرب بأن اسرائيل لا تهزم، وإقناع الغرب بأن إسرائيل مهددة بالموت».

Choosing a class became choosing a discipline, and choosing a discipline became choosing a career, and choosing a career became choosing a life, and how was anyone supposed to do that, when you only had one?
