So far: fascinating look at how tuberculosis has played a major role in history and culture.

Interestingly, author is baffled because the cure for tuberculosis has not reached impoverished areas of the world.

Consider: the conditions that lead to poverty are the same conditions that squash modern medicine: unstable government and lack of private property, therefore efforts to bring the cure always fail.

So I initially thought that Bramwell's depiction of Jonathan (the first of many British upper-class protagonists) as a nincompoop was intended to be a satirical little jab from an Irishman.

However now that I am almost 75% of the way through the book I am absolutely staggered by the unforgivable stupidity of our cast of characters. The total lack of intelligence, agency, communication, and planning have me baffled.

Two difficult things about this book:
The voice is clearly MG but the protagonist is 14.
The internal dialogue is very modern but the external setting and spoken dialogue is premodern.
