Is this author low key praising himself? I'm suspicious.

There is not one type of German, went the thought. There are many who were never Nazis, but remained silent out of fear. Nor is there one type of Nazi. There are those who went along to survive, or for career advancement, or out of a sheepish devotion to the status quo. Then there are the hardcases, the true believers. It is possible we will find what we are looking for only when the last true believer is dead.

Seems very fitting since I just finished Leonardo and The Last Supper. Matched perfectly with my unending WW2 reading list.

I dont know about you, but I picked up the book to know about how he made the painting. The author inserted some of his other unrelated inventions as well. I mean, the politics? I get it but this particular chapter is useless. I read this book to know about THE LAST SUPPER not his helical contraption. I get that the man was genius but if i'm interested I'll pick up his memoir instead.
