Unfortunately, I'm a writer so this keep reminding me that I need to write rather than reading this book.

Absolutely not. That cannot be the answer to the murder mystery.

Oh, thank God, Zale is here. At least someone I care about is on the page.

By the way, if the murderer chopping off heads is one of the dead god's paladins, and the murders are treated as an unfortunate side effect of the death, I will never read another Kingfisher book. The last 1/4 of this book needs to be an in-depth look into loss or I will shred paper.

Also, I'm so sick of false advertising. The log line is "When a god dies, who gets left behind?" That sounds like a fascinating exploration of loss of faith, loss of culture, loss of religion. Instead, I'm reading a romance between a knight/bodyguard and a perfumer. The biggest issue with the god's death is that Stephen is worried about going into a berzerker rage and not being able to come back without his god.

I'm starting to put together why this book annoys me. It's stuffed full of misunderstandings between the two romantic leads. Misunderstanding is my least favorite trope, especially when it actively keeps the characters apart. (Isn't seeing them interact together the point?) I get that Grace and Stephen are both insecure for different reasons. Those are interesting enough to navigate without the misunderstandings.

I'm starting to get worried that these "quirky" heroines are going to be the death of character development. I doubt anyone, no matter how odd, would shout "masculine syrup" at a foreign prince when her entire business is on the line. That Grace has to fight this urge as part of her "quirkiness" makes me wonder if Kingfisher has ever met a woman.

Well, that got uncomfortable very quickly. Poor Helen.

Aaand we're immediately circling back. Most pointless third act break up ever.

What betrayal? He's saved her life countless times and she's been kind to him. Who cares what's on the sword? Did both MCs take crazy pills? I'm so tired.

Not the best book I've read and I'm a little annoyed with the woman main character, but I'll keep going.
