Loving it so far. Lincoln’s chapter is perfect.

How have I never read Calvino before? I love these tiny little, intense, funny, musing tales.

Good good good. Not stylistically unlike Normal People or Exciting Times (dry, sharp, meandering) but somehow more meaningful less self-involved.

“But there are no grown-ups, that’s what you must grow up to know fully; your parents were just two more bodies experiencing landscape and weather, trying to make sense by vibrating columns of air...”

I was sort of reading this book begrudgingly, but wow am I impressed. There’s an almost Franzenian quality to how far Lerner let’s his sentences and digressions unspool, but all to a greater purpose. A kind of loving, exhausted picture-in-pieces of how broken and misled and guilty and self-blind we all are. Not a fun read, per se, but (I repeat) wow. Impressed.

...is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Dark and horrible but so heartrendingly human and pure. The writing itself glorious. Ungentle but true.

This book, which I bought largely because I have a fascination with the setting (North Berwick, Scotland), is surprising me again and again. The most fascinating story line as of the book’s opening is dwindling, while the least interesting storyline is bursting and tangly and rich. I’m caught.

Hilary Mantel is brilliant brilliant brilliant. As good as Wolf Hall. Better than BUTB. Brilliance leaching like sunlight of nearly every page.

Better than anticipated. Easy pacing, but rich with characters and thinking (Mrs Treat and her tarantulas!) that are giving my heart joy.
