In his note to the reader, Gratz writes about how he hopes that Grenade will inspire empathy. Despite this, by p15, he has already used the slur "J*p" 3 times. While there is a note that the book contains words used during WWII, he does nothing to explain that this is a racial epithet, something that is not common knowledge for the intended audience. I have other thoughts but will read more before commenting.

"It's like I'm trying to climb a mountain, but I've got one fool trying to shove me down so I won't be on his level, and another fool tugging at my leg, trying to pull me to the ground he refuses to leave" (66).

I think I would have loved this when I was 20
