The rangers host dinner to Buffalo Hump and his wives. Cobb executes Captain Falconer for refusing to give up his prized rifle.

David and Patricia charter a boat to return to the yacht, where Patricia forsakes her freed mentality for the persona her aunt had grown accustomed to.

The party tried to pull the boat off the shore without waiting for a tugboat before Talliaferro makes Jenny fall in the water from a start.

The parley group returns, Gus in high spirits, Call angry and fearful. Bes-Das relates Buffalo Hump’s requests to Cobb. Gus and Call go out to kill buffalo calves for dinner. Kirker tries to join but gets beaten down by Call.

The Rangers conduct the parley with the Comanches, Bes-Das serving as mediator. After the encounter, it is revealed that the boy Call killed was Buffalo Hump’s son.

Patricia and David locate the road and debate which direction Mandeville is in. Jenny and Pete passionlessly share a conversation that involves the utility of joining a fraternity.

Call is made a Corporal for his bravery during the river attack. The crew is stopped dead in their tracks as they see Comanches in the distance. Cobb suggests a parley and appoints Gus and Call to approach them.

Ayer’s questions Josh about his pipe with devious curiosity.

Patricia and David, after gathering provisions, leave the yacht for Mandeville before sunrise. They share a piece of bread up the shore as the mist breaks.

The rangers cross the Brazos River, losing five companions to Buffalo Hump and the Comanches in the process. Call is attacked by a young boy who he shoots point blank in a startled reaction. Despite much pressure from the troop, he refuses to scalp the child and says he deserves a proper burial. Shadrach scalps him and throws him into the current anyway.

Patricia and David go for their midnight swim and try to hold each other up by their backs while treading water.

While bunking together, Jenny and Patricia talk their bodies, men, their sayings, and college. Mrs. Maurier takes a break from cards and meets up with Gordon who interrogates her about Patricia. Mrs. Wiseman quits the card game and finds Mrs. Maurier, who is acting strangely, and helps her to bed.

After Jenny apparently consents to Talliaferro’s awkward advances, Mrs. Maurier suggests the crew dance to conclude the night. Patricia meets back up with David; they decide to swim together at midnight.

Cobb calls the expedition to order on an early rainy morning long before dawn. Gus, drunk pays a visit to Clara before departing and vows to marry her.

The rangers come upon a farm that has been sacked by the Comanches, the family slaughtered.

Talliaferro assaults Jenny while she sleeps in a most Disney-like fashion. She awakes to great alarm, and he flees.

Patricia spies David cleaning, and he reminisces to her about all the boats he has served on and the beautiful places he has seen around the world. Patricia wants to travel with him, or at least have him go for a swim with her to break up the boredom.

Fairchild observes Josh crafting his ornate cherry wood pipe while telling him about his Yale days and his failed attempt at joining a fraternity.

Call goes to the store and buys some liniment from Clara for Gus. Afterwards, she comes out and rubs it on his foot, promising to return the next morning if he is still there. The rangers get informed that Buffalo Hump has raided a nearby town and decide to follow the trail of destruction, leaving Gus and Johnny behind with the expectation of returning the next day.

The party-of those who are above deck-discuss last night’s weather and the running aground. Fairchild asserts that Talliaferro should be bolder with women.

Pete and Miss Jameson talk about the weather, the tardiness of breakfast, and the futility of love.

After the boat sets sail at dawn of day two, Miss Jameson thinks about her lack of success with men.

While Call is hard at work and after Shadraxh returns from a hunt, Gus gets drunk after not being able to see Clara for the rest of the day. They go on a walk and Gus falls off a cliff. Call runs for help and finds the rest of the rangers drunk, but gets the help of Johnny, who seems least inebriated. At the scene, Johnny inexplicably fires his gun shortly before Gus is found with only and ankle injury.

As the day draws to a close, Talliaferro consults Fairchild about his chances with Patricia. The men return to the deck to find it deserted.

Mrs. Maurier quits the card game and takes a walk, the remainder of the players slowly adjourn.

Josh sneakily gets up after most have fallen asleep to seek some wire for his project. He finds a steel rod in the captain’s quarters and steals it, planning to replace it before morning.

The entourage talks their next destination and the fisherd that may live their over a dinner of grapefruit.
