Just found out John Micklethwait wrote a new book 'The Wake Up Call' (released September 2020, I'm late I know). He was the editor of The Economist mag when I read it and it was still half OK.

Chapter 8 is the best so far, pg 155: Indo-Aryans (in 1000BCE) creating the cast system by co-opting Hinduism in order to control the people they had invaded was so fascinating - I thought it was the British that introduced this horrible system. There are now 3000 'castes' up from 4. Un-fucking-believable, I knew I hated India and now I know why! Most populous democracy? Pfft! Please! Who fucking cares?!! Racists!

Slow-going, a bit too academic yet skimps on some details of first names and just mentions random people without introduction. So many acronyms to memorise.
