Getting tedious.

I'm a third into the book and have gotten so many foreign names, so many details of games of cards and billiards, of purchasing and wheeling-dealing -- but aside from the main character's attraction to a Japanese woman there is no plot at all. I'm close to giving up on this one.

Once Fanny has married Stevenson the story becomes really dull. I've started more skimming and may not finish the book.

Pretty talky. Don't know if I'll get through this one.

Reading this because the author was one of my best friends from 7th grade and well into high school. I hear her sense of humor throughout, but so far feel her style is somewhat overworked and intrusive. Still, I like picking up the book.
