finally got my hands on jamaica kincaid’s “annie john” i’ve been hunting for this one for months and finally my library’s inter-library loan request was approved and i’m just really excited i’ve heard great things about this one…unfortunately there’s a massive ugly sleeve and something else taped to the front that i have to keep on so they can easily scan it and send it back :/

Very much Koch-esque which is starting to scare me because there’s just as much paranoid rambling as there is in The Ditch but thankfully Ventura seems to be way more capable of staying on topic and not letting the narrator meander for pages on end … plus this time around i kinda knew what to expect so ill have more patience with this one.

2 stories in. really enjoyed “Mr. Wu” i thought it was really cute he was just such a freak! i love stories about absolute losers. if it wasn’t for the ending i probably wouldn’t find it so endearing….never back down never WHAT!

i started this thinking the girlfriend would be the inciting problem but at this point even though they’re both crazy i hope she leaves him…please please please leave him and get a fucking life!!

i’ve begun skipping entire pages that are just filled with unimportant boring rambling and distraction from the plot at hand. i’ve ceased to care …i kind of hate you herman

i keep waiting for this to get exciting and awful and in full swing and it’s insisting on chugging along at a grueling pace. shut the fuck up mister mayor!!!!! he even says around page 150 that once you reach page 170 of a book you’ll know if it’s worth it and i’m starting to think this won’t be worth finishing but i’ve got less than halfway i can’t give up now v__v

Every time i feel myself really enjoying this book, the author switches the last names of the main characters parents? Like her name is Abby Rivers but every now and then she’ll call the mom Mrs. Lang, the last name of Abby’s best friend???? and then i get confused and just wonder how her editor and publisher missed so many of these mistakes. Also the random ‘quirky’ 80s racism is a huge turnoff.
