why does everyone in this book lie about their relationship status

Based on the reviews I've read it seems like this one isn't gonna get better :(

So excited to reread this one and finally finish the series

I'm so sad that I'm not enjoying this one :(

It feels like so much of this book isn’t even relevant or important to the main plot like why does it matter that one of the camp counsellors is in an abusive relationship??

Lowkey not enjoying how every chapter is a time jump either forward or backward AND from a different POV

I get that in a romance, the characters should find each other attractive. However, I don’t like the way the mmc is talking about the fmc’s workout outfit and his thought “what is she thinking wearing something like that in front of me?” And “the woman needs to go”. It’s giving the rape culture mindset of “if you didn’t want to get harassed then you shouldn’t be wearing that”

Celeste pisses me off so bad. She acts all high and mighty that she can't trust Gem to not leave her when CELESTE WAS THE ONE WHO GHOSTED GEM THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Celeste ghosted Gemma then Celeste gets mad that Gemma moved on??? Come on..

Most obvious author self-insert omg “says the guy who just used the word ‘enthused’ to insult a girl who likes looking up synonyms. It’s a writer thing.” Yeah, it was very obviously that you “like” looking up synonyms. There’s so many big/obscure words that don’t belong throughout the entire book.

There’s a whole lot of nothing going on in this book. However, as someone who has also repressed most of their childhood and hasn’t gone to therapy, this book sure has some relatable quotes lol

I hate to say this but I feel like there’s too many recurring characters..

This book making me realize that any new modern-day romance released with characters younger than 25-26 are characters who were cannonically born in the year 2000 or after gave me the ick for modern-day romance lmao

The mmc not having basic human empathy for the fmc really reminds me that this is supposed to be dark romance.. easy to forget when it's also a rom-com

"He didn't like being the one doing the fucking all that much; he loved being fucked. Women were not properly equipped to do that, and Shane was too embarrassed to ask them to use a dildo on him, so he more or less forced himself to endure the act of fucking women." Are we for real??? So not only are we dealing with gay fetishization but also misogyny in a story with no women??

So I understand that internalized homophobia is something that a lot of queer people have to work through, but the way it keeps getting mentioned plus the absurd amount of sex that’s already happened, I still can’t shake the feeling that the author is just sexualizing/fetishizing gay men which feels gross
