Not halfway through the book and am champing at the bit to get back to it. Kind of Orwellian in a sense that I'm applying the story to the U.S.-- not as the recipient of refugees but as refugees ourselves.

One of the most compelling books I've read. Worked on so many levels from storytelling to language and from colonial history to humanity and the human condition. If I taught almost ANYTHING to do with literature I'd teach this book. It'll definitely be one to re-read periodically and will be recommended to any world lit lover.

Mia Couto's books should be taught in every high school literature department. His universal messages of gender and politics and history should be studied in university English departments. Every writer should study his oeuvre to improve her lyricism, storytelling, pace, perspective, and dynamics. Absolutely incredible.

Swoon-worthy prose. Mesmerizing blend of magic, nature, and sexism. And such a compelling manner of writing about love even this misanthrope's heart has leapt toward romance.

I did NOT want this book to end, savored every page, never skimmed, sometimes cried at the beauty, often reveled in Hamid's refreshing honest, cherished his publisher's (Mariner Press) audacity. Read well. Read colorfully. Read the Reluctant Fundamentalist.

Surprising language. Would love to get the translator and author together to learn more about the original language. Very kewl and insightful book. Please read it!

Please read this. Its satire is funny but because of its setting, Pakistan, it's also educational in terms of learning more about the concept of man/woman and non-Muslim religious expression.

Majmudar is an emotionally astute writer whose lyrical language deftly complements his attention to detail. Any reader could tell he's a poet by nature.

Reading this book requires slow progression only because so many sentences and paragraphs want to be copied onto a Post-It and stuck on a wall and because the fascinating facts revealed about my beloved India send me of to gorge on more info

Most of the characters drive me nuts. The pace crawls excruciatingly slowly as Upadhyay wallows in mostly irrelevant details.

Sometimes a terrific read like this leaves you feeling sad. Sad because it's unlikely you'll read something of equal greatness for quite a while.

Best fiction I've read this year. Looking forward to reading all of Desai's work.
