This shit pisses me off but I paid $3 for the ebook so I’m sunk cost fallacy-ing myself into death by annoyance. I need a quality book on Victorian life after this to wash the taste out of my mouth

“Have you ever looked at the covers of your mother’s trashy romances and wondered if those women were pushing away their kilted, oily-chested lovers not because of deep rivalry between their equally sexy clans, but because it was her time of the month and she didn’t want his greasy man-breath anywhere near her?” No I never thought that 😑Jesus Christ this is insufferable, yet here I am, still reading

Ok did not know about wiping asses with wet bare corncobs, the thought of a shit covered corn cob is revolting but now that I think about it they would make a decent wiping tool if you didn’t have toilet paper

Ok I hadn’t actually checked the publication date or author age before reading, still haven’t in fact, but all doubts I had of this being written by a millennial were erased when I read how we should use Victorian toilet habits to move our daughters through their “tragically deluded princess phase” and hopefully “scoot her right into her infinitely more pleasant horses and Harry Potter phase.”😭

I’m so annoyed I paid $3 for this. I don’t need you tell me that if I lived in the past I would’ve likely not been one of the wealthy few, like holy shit what are we five years old? This is a book about history, sex, the more taboo and the ordinary-but-grimy aspects of life in the Victorian era. I’m going to try and push through this god awful writing style to see if I can glean some good facts

Not off to a great start and only a few pages in. The condescending tone is obnoxious. Also pretty sure anyone picking up this book knows that the Victorian era wasn’t as prim and proper as some media would have us believe. That’s kind of the whole point in seeking out a book like this.

Ok so when a women reports to her boss the goings on of the women’s building and what is happening while she’s away, that’s gossip, but when a man does the exact same shit he’s a spy and skillfully keeping his employer informed, notably without the moral judgment of being a “gossip”

I love when a nonfiction book unearths a million rabbit holes that I must then immediately explore upon finishing said book. Devil in the White city has already given me a “further reading list” about 10 topics/books long. Unionization and working class movement of the late 1800s, American architecture of the 1800s, circuses/freakshows, origins of true crime fanaticism, AC vs DC electricity drama, and much more!

Genuinely do not remember anything that happens in this book, this was the last one I read before I stopped continuing the series. Excited to finally be caught up and start the others after this

H. H. Holmes was a scammer for the love of the game, my guy couldn’t go two days without committing insurance fraud or writing fake checks. Buying hella bicycles on credit, reselling them, then not paying the creditors is objectively hilarious and should not be punishable.

I can feel the hyper fixation taking hold. I gotta know everything there is to know about the 1893 Chicago World Fair also I need to time travel there and I need to eat a meal they would’ve eaten at the fair and I need to ride a Ferris wheel stat
