I read two novels and wanted to use goodreads again but I fell back into the world of webnovels. This one in particular is pretty amazing and the english edition of vol. 1 was just released. I'm currently ~50% through the fan translation of the whole series.

A general update. Pre COVID-19 I was at an in-person, customer service job where I liked to read non-fiction on-the-clock/when there were no customers. Now I wfh. I've gotten really into Asian webnovels that I read on my phone. I have a novelsupdate account. Webnovels similar to fanfic are a bit different due to their update cycle. There is also a bit of a general divide in subject similar to shounen v shoujo. AMA?

Perhaps an update is warranted! I'm dropping Wealth and Power. Although it gave a great history/background of China it was very dry. I got about halfway though it and took physical notes. Somehow all my updates/reading progress disappeared?! The most important takeaways were the details of Mao Zedong and the concept of National Humiliation in China. It also introduced me to Sir Edmund Trelawney (ref?!) Backhouse.

I'm not sure how much I can enjoy in a book / biography dealing with finance. Lots of tempers, egos and multi-million dollar deals.

peak anime

I'm reading this because there were several ingenious moments in the anime but the dialogue can be so dumb, "panties."

I like to say I'm "new" to anime but it's been ~4 years now. I've heard people derogatorily comment that of course such anime is this way, it's based off a light novel! Now I understand lol. All the fanservice and tropes that annoy me seem 10x worse in written format (worse than anime and manga).

I really enjoyed reading the afterword. That was kind of my purpose for reading the book -- to understand the literary and political references to it and its significance.

I think 1984 is a great philosophical work but horrible otherwise. It ruined my chi, I owe late fees to the library, ruined my streak of reading, I almost reached level 40 on Pokemon Go etc, etc.
