Okay Im REALLY getting into this. This isn't a retelling but an original myth from the same universe as Homer's Odyssey and the plot is directly influenced by events from the Odyssey. This is the first novel I know of that is similar to Epic of Helinthia in that its a totally new myth. I'm here for this and I'm stoked actually.

"At the eleventh hour" took me OUT!

That term exists because in WW1, greedy generals forced soldiers to fight and die up until the treaty's effective time, "the eleventh hour" of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. This is not a phrase I should ever hear in an ancient Greek/historical adjacent anything.

Im SQUINTING

I'm enjoying this. It's poetically verbose, but it's captivating and the characters are very interesting. The worldbuilding makes it very clear the author is very intimate with post- WW2 Berlin. I think this would be an incredible audiobook tbh.

This is WILDLY irreverent and I'm devouring it. This is definitely not for everyone. The themes depict numerous religions in unconventional ways. But im finding it very entertaining and I cannot put it down

Man. Just got to the part where Hera smacks Artemis in the head. Ruthless 😆. I forgot that part was in there but now that ive reread it i might reference it in War of Helinthia.

This book spends 50% of the time going around in circles having the same conversations about they can do or have to do. This close to dnf'ing.

I don't understand Inan. Is he the king or not? I don't understand why he doesn't just tell his mother to shut up. This is exhaustingly irritating.

So. There's a homophobic thread in this book that I was very hopeful had a real purpose to the plot, ie a catalyst for societal change (inclusivity and equality) at the end. Sadly, it did not deliver and wasn't even addressed. In fact, it was kind of made worse. This upsets me because the author did such a phenamenal job with worldbuilding and character development. A novel hasn't upset me this much in a while.

I've known a lot of this history for some time but haven't quite been able to articulate it in a way that shows a clear and logical argument and progression. But this has absolutely hit the mark.
I wish everyone would read this.

This. This is difficult. Honestly it's a shame that so many people are up and arms against this scholarship. I'd argue that most of the people who are haven't read this and aren't brave enough to. If they did, I think they'd come into an invaluable understanding of our world, our history, and ourselves.

Acquired this from the author at Barnes and Noble today and Im already so engrossed. I love history, especially when it delves into individual experiences and day in the life accounts, and this is very interesting so far. The author has done a great job with presentation and setup for everyone who she interviewed to capture their experiences, and chapter 2 is going be fascinating, I can't wait.

I recently watched a tiktok of someone blasting romantasies for undermining the plot for the sake of the romance instead of making the romance complement and support the plot.

Sharon Lynn Fisher KNOWS how to create a romance that compliments and validates the plot. This is my third novel of hers Ive read and her romance never overshadows or competes with the plot. Grimm Curiosities is no exception. I am RIVETED!

Exceptionally interesting beginning to what I know will be a phenomenal overview of the Viking Age, mainly because its already subverting the established norms of 'when' the viking age started and ended and weaving in historical accounts from ancient Greece and Rome to allude to a much earlier history than 793. Super super excited to be reading this!
