I already have a strong suspicion that this book is going into the didn't finish pile.

Reading this reminds me why I like short stories more than novels. I might go on a big Years Best binge.

I dunno if I can finish this. It's like eating cold asparagus.

I doubt I am going to finish this. I don't think Stephen King has as much to do with the book as the author credit suggests, and it assumes a high level of baseball knowledge, which I don't have, being not a sportsball person.

I'll give it a couple more chapters, but it's not looking great.

This book is pretty ok. I find it a bit strange to be reading 3rd person omniscient narration and suddenly, for just one character, 1st person past tense, which is compounded by that characters arrogance.

Otherwise, it's standard Asher - an array of oddball strangers, a series of coincidences, a violent confrontation and a humorous resolution. He's pretty good at it by now.

Much stronger than the previous book in this series. I read that Ashers partner passed away a couple of years before he wrote this series, and that he stopped writing for a long time. I think it shows in the difference between the prose in the previous book and this one.

"But Nate," I heard them say in response to my previous monologue, which I made while simultaneously affectorizing the doodad that I had secretly controlled all along, despite their incessant yet ineffective meddling, "You can't just say that and think that everything can continue as it was before."

I simultaneously moved my totally not a chess piece in my totally not chess mental exercises because I am godlike.

Neal Asher has excellent story ideas, and such a creative mind. His prose is a labour. NOBODY talks like that, Neal. Nobody except David Niven and James Mason, and they only talked like that in the bloody movies!

I've only read the intro and the title essay so far. Solnit is very funny and writes with a pleasantly cynical voice. Men would do well to read and learn from this book.

Very excited to read this, I am gonna start straight away.

I did read a shitload of Brian Aldiss shorts in April though. And a couple on other things that I can't remember off the top of my head, stuff I grabbed off the actual bookshelf.

Just in case you noticed, the reason I stopped updating my books was because I was computerless through April and I hate the mobile app, but I didn't read much anyway, because I was on a comics bender. But I am back to text now, so I will be updating again.

I have to be honest and say that I am probably not going to finish this. Reading some doof's opinion of Steinbeck is a bit silly when I can just read Steinbeck!! Tortilla Flats, Here I Come!!!

I got onto this book from an essay entitled Bureaucracy and the Tyrany of Stupidity by the author. Graeber is a really enjoyable writer to read, his style is very casual and clear. His subject matter is both vital and futile. Sigh.

I didn't realise this was a YA title until I was half way through. It's ok. I'll finish it, but it is very...juvenile.

This is a reboot of a book I read as a kid.

Turns out this is book 5 of the old mans war series, so I am gonna leave this one for the moment.
