This is a collection of short stories. It's surprising how well ACD can set up a weird mystery and then has Holmes explain everything in such a reasonable way, I feel like Watson when he says everything seems obvious after Holmes explains it lmao

Definitely isn’t a continuation of book 1, but quite a few characters from book 1 are in this one and some of the world building from that carried over. Again, not as crazy as people say in terms of difficulty getting into it. Great so far.

Not much has happened yet, I’m not sure if I like how it’s written but we’ll see.

The epub I have of this finishes at around 70% because it’s short and has many pages of footnotes. I took a break with like 10 mins of reading left thinking I had a lot to go lmao. This is the first bit of full-on philosophy I’ve read and it was good. Despite Seneca’s wisdom I will continue playing collect all pets jajaja

Finished the Cosette section. Really good story but the philosophy/Hugo’s thoughts on religion in “Petit Pipcus” and “A Parenthesis” back to back was rough.

I really liked the Jean Valjean chapters and it made Myriel’s intro worth it. The way it ended with Petite Gervais and him at the doorstep was great. As for Fantine, her section annoyed me because Tholomyés waffled constantly. “These young men were insignificant; … neither good nor bad, neither learned nor ignorant, neither talented nor stupid; handsome in that charming April of life we call twenty.”

Another big one, hope it’s worth it. So far it’s been ok, a little boring, but I’m only 25 pages in and don’t know anything. The description of the guillotine was great, wonder how many people will be executed throughout the book. I also thought this was clean “If the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but he who causes the darkness.”🥶

nah that chapter with The Kid was awful

Finished book one. I like the characters and what’s cracking so far but King actually turbo spams American pop culture references which I don’t get because I’m not an American who grew up in the 60s/70s so that’s ruining it a bit for me.
