Larry is on page 100 of 332 of The War That Killed Achilles: The True Story of Homer's Iliad and the Trojan War
Informative. Sometimes the discussion seems to jump around as if the author were thinking out loud. I read the poem last year. Then read the Anied so I found this analysis very useful for the context.

This book has an interesting story of settlement in the mid-west written around the life of one man. It is light reading. I have to wonder just how much of the content has been rigorously checked. Mccullough isn't afraid of adding his own suggestions of what the weather was like that time or other guesses about what the pioneers faced.

Love these stories. Can't believe that a woman with a rough childhood could become such a sophisticated author.

Larry is reading Miller's Valley
I just finished Miller's Valley: A Novel and gave it 5 stars. This is a story of a woman growing up in a small town (valley) that would disappear someday. The book covers 50 years of living as told by a 12 year old girl. It is about the strength of relationships with family, friends, community, and the physical space that surrounds daily life.

Larry is reading Candide
This 18th century story by Voltaire, written just after the devastating earthquake in Lisbon in 1750, is very relevant to the 21st century. It pokes fun at men seeking power and unreal ideology. Some passages contain painful description of the horrors of men beating men (and women). It would be given an R rating if filmed as written. But the message of simple living as a cure to hubris lives.
