Austin is reading The Sassafras Science Adventures: Volume One: Zoology
This book is okay, I guess. It held the interest of my first-grader, but whether it did the job it set out to do, provide them with meaningful education on zoology...well, the Wild Kratts are light years ahead of Sassafras. The characters are artificial and cliched. The vocabulary was gratifyingly high, stretched my kids. But it was way longer than necessary, and the characterization and believability were awful.

This book took me weeks to finish, where other YA books of similar length took me two days. It was boring, it lacked a plot, and it was unsatisfying. It's like a clinical, textbook description of autism forced into a first person narrative. It was obvious that it was a neurotypical trying to assume a role in order to instruct (not entertain) the misunderstanders and don't-carers around her. Advocacy fiction alert.
