What does “overcoming” your disability look like to you? What would your “disabled normal” look like, even if it doesn’t adhere to other people’s “normal”?

Finally finished the introduction… holy moly this book is such heavy reading 😥

Very very dense reading

Yes, I suppose this “whirlwind romance” is cute, except when you remember she tried to pity-romanticize bisexual cheating and ruining a several year long marriage(?) in the beginning of the book, and that this woman is 23 and she’s 30. Yikes.

Hasn’t this taken a fucking TURN.

Tainted by the fact that the author tries to spin their infidelity as a sob story for why they connect with the subject.

It’s so interesting how differently the tone of the descriptions for the destruction can be interpreted depending on how you view the Iraq War. Swofford’s view is, on it’s own, a bit ambiguous, but it can be argued as either somewhat patriotic, VERY sarcastic and bitter, a little jaded and harrowed, or a combination of all three. It’s quite a treat.

This is a lot more dichotomous and personal than the movie. I’m really enjoying it!

“Sniper” was first applied to eighteenth century British riflemen serving in India, referring to one who was so good he could theoretically take down a snipe, a bird which is notoriously difficult to hunt.
