Praying for this to be over. The dullest book about a bludgeoning sledgehammer murderer I’ve ever read.

I’m actually rereading this and since I read the first book in the series recently, I thought I would see if agreed with my original 2 star rating! I liking it better than 2 stars now!

I forgot what made me stop to write this, and that was, on page 182, chapter ending; I almost screamed! 😝

This writer is SO good. This book was her debut, and I somehow missed it through the years. Her other later novels are SO beyond twisted and absolutely SO macabre I had to tell my sensitive sister NOT to read them! I’ll tell anyone else “You gotta read this book!”

Nope. Not gonna finish. The sentences are short and choppy, and the dialogue is moronic. Not gonna punish myself anymore trying get to the end
of a BAD thriller/suspense novel for THE BIG PAYOFF you hope for at the very end.

I’m only on page 27 and I hate the character, the writing style, and the plot. Otherwise, it’s a great book. 😝

So far this is TERRIBLE. Writing on a 5th grade level at most. I think it’s gonna take me about 20minutes to read it if the GLARING plot mistakes don’t force me to give up. Reads like a self-published bad novel.

Charlie Donlea books are so similar in tone and content. In reading three, one after the other, I got the abducted girls mixed up! 🤭 Donlea is a good writer, but I wouldn’t suggest bingeing on his books because they become more obviously formulaic.

I am pretty sure I already read this, but since I am 68 and the book was published in 1963, I could have read it 40 years ago and forgotten it. 😨 it’s quite well known as starting the whole stalker/sicko/abducted women genre, or at least being one of the firsts. Just came off of reading three of Charlie Donlea’s books.

Have heard really great things about this author so I am looking forward to this “….gem of a mystery, fast paced and suspenseful.” This according to a blurb on the cover. Yep, I’m hooked. 🎣

I’m just starting “The Cabinet Of Dr. Leng.” I just finished the two previous books and I just ate them up. I gave up on this series about halfway through, but “Blue Labyrinth” was so good it made me buy the last four books in the series. Preston & Child have really recaptured the qualities that made “Relic” a best selling gang buster of a novel.

So far I’m enjoying it throughly..the writing is GOOD! So much so that I went ahead and ordered Andromeda stain that I know I read, like, 50 years ago? They made a movie out of it with Dustin Hoffman? I think? (Straining my aged brain here. Damn. One of the bad things about living so long and blessed with loving to read is that wondrous books will be written continually after your gone.

This writing is immaculate! I could never write like this, and I think her subsequent novels are like someone else wrote them compared to The Secret History. This is her masterwork, without doubt.
My own little personal confession; I am a lifelong reader. I marked this novel “To Read” in 2013. As I’ve been reading it, (Oh, I’m embarrassed!) I realized that I had already read it when it was first published.

This title popped up in a Goodreads cheapie bin when I was ordering something else. There was some other incentive to purchase I can’t recall-99 cents..I think I paid for it.
🤦‍♀️validated my memories of sloppy writing; male-centric viewpoints from cavemen days, and, dare I say, just LAZY writing. Outdated, predictable hack storylines. I let my new puppy use it as a chew toy.

Oh man, I love this series! I can’t believe J.K. Rowling went from Harry Potter to Cormorant Strike, but the same style is there, albeit a lot more edgy. Definitely rooting for this hapless hero.

This novel is AMAZING; part psychological thriller, part detective novel. I’m finding it to be one of Ruth Rendell’s finest, and that says a lot! Almost done and so far a 5 star tidal wave that scooped me up from the beginning and hopefully won’t spit me out at the end.

I DO so like novels about the 1920’s and how the ‘20’s excesses led to the 30’s depressions. I think I was a flapper in another life.

This is a loooong book. I wasn’t liking it too much but then he kills off the only, fully fleshed out character, and I thought, “uh uh, not going there for the last half of the book. Just ain’t.”

I’m watching the movie. Apparently everyone in the future carries messengers bags; it’s cool and it’s English. Movie not following book in the slightest. Note to self: Buy messenger bag.

VERBOSITY
wordy, verbose, prolix, diffuse mean using more words than necessary to express thought. wordy may also imply loquaciousness or garrulity. a wordy speech verbose suggests a resulting dullness, obscurity, or lack of incisiveness or precision.

I think, (although I’ve never heard myself say this) that I’ll just watch the movie. 😱

Not understanding nor liking so far. I’m not sure who it’s target audience is for; my opinion it reads like a YA novel. I remember everybody reading it when it first came out and I was expecting more. So far it reads like a Stephanie Meyers vampires book to me.

This may turn out to be my favorite John Irving. It’s a mixture of pathos and absolute hilarity, and full of magical realism which I love. I’ve read passages through tears in my eyes and ones where I’ve laughed out loud. It’s maybe his most accessible novel and will be recommending it to everyone I know.

I hope I can be okay reading this right now. His writing is so good, but already there are a lot of heart-breaking moments and I struggle with enough depression and free floating DREAD in my daily life. Hope my anti-depressants pull me through.
