Great fun. A very satisfying thriller. With an intelligent dog.

I'm only half way through this stand-alone novel by the author of several excellent series of historical novels. I can already tell you that this is a first-rate story by a master storyteller. The rich language of the poor 19th century Londoners is great fun. The suspense is rich. A colorful, entertaining book. If you like Sherlock Holmes or crime novels in general, you will definitely enjoy this one.

Just getting started and already I can say that this is excellent historical fiction written in beautiful prose. Somehow the elaborate description and historical references do not slow down the fast pace of the story. It feels like Sherlock Holmes, only richer in detail and sense of time and place. A very engaging book at the start.
