This book really feels like being a silent friend to Simone and Lydia and Claudia. I love the experience of reading this. It’s serious subject matter doesn’t feel like a heavy anchor weighing the story down. And the narrative style has a gripping realism of adolescent effervescence with wisps of carefree undertones that are usually absent from YA tackling strong themes. I can’t wait to read more of this. ❤️

G, E and M are strong is such different ways. I would be loving this if it weren’t for the romance, which comes across as ham-fisted in an otherwise elegant story.

So engaging and immersive that I’ve connected with these women that I have almost nothing in common with.

So good. Well paced. Good characters. Great dialogue between the MCs. The world, despite being urban fantasy, leaves too many questions in answered, but that doesn’t really take away from the story. A solid 4 so far.

Pretty writing. The prettiest of Schwab’s books I’ve read so far. August has quickly stolen my heart, although Kate makes me apprehensive since she’s shaking up to be a similar flavour of badass that Lila from ADSOM was. I do hope Kate has more dimension to her, but so far August + that writing is carrying this tale for me in some really great ways.

I love this book so far. I can’t wait to read it after Vicious, which didn’t hook me nearly as fast as this story has.

I like this story so far, but it’s due and I have too many other books out from the library to continue it. I’m not renewing it, but I intend to pick it up a little later when I don’t have so many books on the go.

One of my faves from 2018. Such an incredibly written story.

Started in Oct. Didn’t pick it up during Yule Witchathon because, no time.

Hoping to get this done tomorrow since it’s due and I can’t renew this anymore. 😅

Almost DNF. But it’s gotten better. The pace has been more palatable in the last 100 pages than it was for the 100 pages before those. I’m genuinely curious about a few things, and the suspense is less artificial. Enjoying Kell less, still unsure on Lila (leaning towards meh, no) but Rhy’s starting to sound fun. I wish the exposition didn’t assume I’m a dumbass, but you lose some. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Too many things in this book are coated in a film of artificiality. The intrigue, instead of building naturally, comes across as calculated. I’m still not sure what the plot of this story is aside from screaming mysterious. Kell continues to deliver, and I’m thoroughly enjoying him as a character. Lila... is inconsistent at best and one-dimensional at worst.

I’m enjoying Kell, & curious about Lila’s bg. Maybe I should be more curious about Kell & his mysterious past... But I want to find out why Lila is fearless vice brave. It’s an key distinction in behaviour & I’m itching to discover what makes a woman in the early 1800s fearless, when the social climate of her time used fear to subjugate women. Also, I hope Barron is more than a cameo. He seems a mentor I’d like.

I forgot how shy Beth was. Her relationship with grandpa Laurence over their shares interest in music is one of my faves. Marmee is delightfully clever. The unabridged version lots more religious values, which can get jarring with its prevalence, but it makes sense for the when and where of this story. It’s still a story about gender and class divides, and sisterhood. I’m enjoying it.

I’m not yet sure if the cover art is my favourite part of this story so far. I was running on intensely jittery negative feelings this evening so I’m probably not being fair to this story right now. Let’s see how I feel about it tomorrow.

Lots to discover yet. This story flows like silk. The characters and world in this story are nicely layered. The mystery is engaging without being a campy, formulaic thriller. My favourite part of this story is a toss up between the world itself and the relationships between the characters, which feel heart-warmingly genuine.

This book is wonderfully crafted. The writing and characters are smart and engaging. I’m already so attached to Caden.

I expected a dark story, maybe it’ll get there, but for now it’s whimsically cute with hints of is-this-my-life-I-don’t-recognize terror.

I’m reading it piecemeal and feel like I’m missing things - connections, symbolism. In many ways I’m feel as paranoid as Caden.

It’s such a campy romance. I get why it needs to be a part of the story, but fuck, is this what 15 year old love is? I mean the formula must come from somewhere but my teens were so damn different. I’m still waiting for the initiating incident in the series plot to happen. This book is unexpectedly slow but not in a bad way. I expected a faster pace, but now I’m anticipating the ramp up in the final chapters.

The story kind of crept up on me with it’s eerie suspense. It kind of slipped in as the romantic sub-plot got better, and now I want to continue reading but can’t keep my eyes open but think the Mogadorians are in my house. Something bad this way comes...

The read feels a lot better than watching the movie, which I also enjoyed. I was craving an action-adventure and this is definitely hitting the spot. It’s going at a good clip and I like that the competing alien races are two opposing but possible futures for the human species on Earth today. But god, the romance is so campy. It’s the only part of this story so far I feel was better handled in the movie.

Claire Legrand is to my blood what the moon is to Earth’s waters. I can’t remember the last time it swelled and crashed and lurched this way.

First two chapters in, and the memories of these stories from my adolescence are still buried deep. Still love the art work and the androgynous lead character. How can you not love a series where the sidekick is an excitable vampire-bunny?

While this was a compelling premise, and an interesting story, it failed to engage me. Part of it was the choice of narrator, who was supposed to be omniscient but it wasn't intuitively so. Another part of it was the disjointed narrative. There were pages where the narrative flowed smoothly, but other times it struggled to connect.

I want to finish it, but couldn't in the 3 weeks I had this on loan from the library.

This is slice-of-life meets psychological horror, and I really like it. I’m not sure why this would be categorized a psychological thriller because suspense doesn’t really drive the plot or the emotions. And IMHO, it’s really apparent who did it.
