Maybe it’s cause I’m not from the South, but this feels…incredibly heavy handed. I also think the family legacies that prevent them from being messed with feel like the author not wanting to show the MC experiencing more racism.

Like…the school is changing the lunch budget so everyone can eat BUT him because he left a football game. It’s not really about the inciting incident.

“I don’t see anything but people who were born with indisputable inalienable rights, which include the ability to demand anything and everything possible from the likes of yourself.”

Sounds about white 🙄 they can demand he play, but he can’t demand they respect his privacy during a difficult time

I don't know nearly enough about Cuba's history, but from what I'm seeing in this story, the author's parents and grandparents were of means and/or had a plantation and escaped to America because they were capitalist? I think it's wild they're pretending the US is a place "where you can be what you want to be, not just what the government says" but like...we ALSO had ration books and snitched on neighbors?

1.) The poems about the dog siblings are psychopathic
2.) This wants to be Shel Silverstein so bad, but it takes it JUST a bit too far. I liked the bird one, but I feel like the last sentence ruins it by spelling out the joke for the reader.

“But the townsfolk never had a Black athlete to hang their hats on like other Mississippi towns, a ‘Negro’ of their own…if they could, they’d probably stamp him with a charring GM brand across his chest, the same as the would for cattle or hogs.”

Add in art theft, as well. Good lord, the plot just HAPPENS to make something interesting. And it's still boring.
