Once again, everyone was going on and on about how "good" this book was and how once you read it, you would understand why everyone is excited about Newbery. What I understand is that I should've trusted my instinct when I DNF'd it the first TWO times. I'm bored af. This is a weird book.

This book is weird. I'm not enjoying it. The story in part two is wholly different than part one. I know we're "reading the journal he found", but it's full of just random feeling details that wouldn't make any sense.

"We treated you so badly, all the hateful things we printed, did and said...but please, please don't despise us. We were stupid. We were kids. We didn't know."

I hate that this is from 1982 and this sounds like the kind of nonsense you here "former MAGA" saying now. "Don't hate us for spreading lies that got you killed. We didn't know!" You did. You absolutely did.

Ok, only one additional chapter to update, but wow, this book is pretty misogynistic. Really tired of women always being helpless or portrayed as loose.

The writing is good, especially for a children's nonfiction book. But I'm ~50% through and the rabbits are STILL in the park. I thought it would be more about them getting them and then rehabbing the rabbits.

I'm glad the friend called the MC out because yes, she has been avoiding her. Yes, she could've/should've talked to her about how her new relationship was impacting their friendship. And yes, you literally did include a part in your poem that was about your friend and sure, it's "about you", but it's about her, too. You're a writer. Use your words. Talk instead of just telling everyone how stupid everyone else is.

I'm glad this exists for the kiddos who need it, but it feels like a reskin of Genderqueer but more linear this time. Especially when it contains the cover pic at least twice.

That said, I do appreciate that the MC is less stigmatizing towards having a period. That was a HUGE issue I had with Genderqueer. I would feel much more comfortable recommending this to a teen who is questioning their identity.
