Fiery critique on Taylorism.
Many reviews mention racism and sexism, but I have a different interpretation. To me, it seems in line with the *main character’s worldview*, not the author’s. Instead of pinning these opinions on the author, it is equally a critique of early 20th century social attitudes towards sex and race. It’s a first-person narrative. A main character need not reflect the views of the author.

“Claiming privileged access to Sun’s handwritten notes and private conversations with his wife, Dai argued that the late leader was preoccupied with yu – the reproduction (shengyu), cultivation (yangyu) and education (jiaoyu) of the populace. Unfortunately, Sun did not have the chance to discuss the concept in public and left faithful disciples like Dai to complete the task.”

holy peak. good work citing some niche development of corporatist theory in Europe, especially Catholic cultures. Clearly there was a theoretical affinity among Catholic corporatists and their notions of stewardship.

Really establishes the background for what allowed something like the Nanjing Decade to occur. Shanghai was so out of place, being such an incredibly massive hub. Its mixed (colonial concession) population, politically conscious working and business classes, also contributed. The guilds evolving in the face of imperialism and government devolution is a major point, so far. Excited to see where Fewsmith takes this.

Chiang joined the war on drugs on the side of drugs. The bank he founded with his opium money only went defunct in Taiwan in 2006, being incorporated into the Taiwan Cooperative Bank. Du Yuesheng’s ghost haunts the vaults…
