He states at the beginning that he prefers to be here at war rather than staying at home. (He does not say why) It is clear that he has always wanted to go to war and his eagerness to fight reveals the fearlessness and excitement he has while being there.

The way Ernst behaves is surprising because he shows that he is a born warrior.
