Oof this is a rough read that has not aged well... Hoping it gets better by the end

Parts of this book are great (it's part of why I'm finishing it) but man certain parts are so lazy and/or predictable that it's hard to read. I get that Katrina was sheltered, but even a sheltered/naive person wouldn't have drank the damn tea. Also the slow burn romance is killing me. Just stop not talking and admit you like each other. It's like a 13 yr old's vision of relationships/feelings.

I honestly don't know why I thought I was strong enough to not read this... but then the reviews started coming out and here I am.

Is it well written? Well, no. But it's interesting and it's nice being able to hear Britney's story from her side of things. It does read a tiny bit like a teenager's diary, but the story so far has been from the perspective of teen Britney, so it isn't bothering as much as it could be.

Dude... if body horror freaks you out don't read this.

But if you want something to freak you out than this is a must read. Only 50 pages in and I'm hooked. Though I really shouldn't be reading this before bed... fingers crossed I don't dream, or if I do it's of normal non-death/blood related things.

It's been well over a decade since I've read this (loved it in high school!) and while I'm still having a lot of fun, it's pretty dated. The main relationship between Elena and Clay has been a rougher/more problematic read in my 30s than it was in my late teens, all the red flags everywhere lol

Maybe it's just because I'm not really enjoying the series overall, but it's weird to me that Nathan has been 17 for the last two books. It just doesn't make sense with everything that's happened. Shouldn't Nathan at the very least be 18 now? The constant spouting of "I feel so old... so much has happened, so much time has passed... oh wait, no time as passed, I'm just 17." Is obnoxious and I hate it.

It's weird and annoying that the first two book referred to everyone as Black or White witches, but in this book it's Blood or Fairborne witches. This is extra annoying since the magical weapon is also called Fairborne...

Shouldn't this be the most exciting part of the book? Why am I so bored? Also I feel like I should be attached to Annalise, but I just don't really care... which is making me not really care about Nathan.

A quick and easy read so far, pretty meh as far as stories/characters but fun despite that. Undecided if I'll read the last book, we'll see how I feel once this one is finished.

Welp, I don't think Joe R Landsdale is for me. His story was well written but I couldn't get past the weirdness. Usually I enjoy a bit of weirdness but the rape of handless 12 yr old zombies is apparently where I draw the line.

Gestella by Susan Palwick is one of the coldest, most depressing stories I've read in a long time. Honestly it was so depressing that I think I need to go hangout in the sun for a bit and stop reading.

"Ok. What did the owner say her name was?"
"Stella."

Absolutely gutted in less than 20 pages, well played Susan Palwick, well played.

Hit by Bruce McAllister and Boobs by Suze McKee Charnas were not my cup of tea at all. Not a fan of women being given away as prizes after their SO are murdered, also not a fan of all of the dog hate/killing in Boobs. Probably my two least favorite stories in the whole anthology so far. Also (again) the romance was minimal at best, which seems an odd choice for the paranormal romance section.

While still super dark the Paranormal Romance section finally had some fun stories. Though it's weird that only the Patricia Briggs and Norman Partridge stories actually contained any love or still existing romance so far. "She's My Witch" by Norman Partridge has been my favorite in the section so far (which is surprising considering how much I love Briggs and just assumed her story would be my favorite)

Just started the Paranormal Romance part of the book and already the first two stories have just been meh. Companions to the Moon by Charles De Lint was ok, A Haunted House of Her Own by Kelly Armstrong was the same. Both had unexpected endings and weren't bad, they just weren't that great either. Also, so far the romance has been pretty sad, with the relationships basically done before you even meet the characters.

Julie's Unicorn by Peter S Beagle was wonderful, loved it almost as much as Make a Joyful Noise by Charles De Lint. Time to start the paranormal romance section. I'm really enjoying the break up of sub genres in this story collection and the essay write ups explaining each one.

The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories by Neil Gaiman was surprisingly disappointing and boring. The next story On The Road to New Egypt by Jeffery Ford was more fun to read but still kind of meh. Hoping the next two will be better, the Charles De Lint story is still my favorite one so far.

A Bird that Whistles by Emma Bull - I really wish I liked western fantasy more, I just can't seem to enjoy it. Sorry Emma Bull I'm starting to think you just aren't my cup of tea.

Make a Joyful Noise by Charles De Lint - Lint on the other hand was brilliant and I loved this story. The fact that it featured crows in an awesome and helpful (but fun/mischievous) light made it even better.

I'm actually liking this a lot better than I thought I would. Interesting MC who was semi brainwashed by a now toppled villainous government and has been in prison for 10 years. I hope things continue being this good, not a 5 star read yet but could be a 4 if it keeps up.
